Somatic Therapy

Somatic Therapy is different to classic talk therapy.

Whereas talking therapy focuses on, and engages with the mind, somatic therapy is a technique that approaches healing from a body based perspective which acknowledges the interconnection between the mind and the body.

Contemporary approaches in somatic therapy have been used since the mid 1970s.

Healing Through the Body

The fundamental notion of somatic therapy concerns treatment that places attention on the body and how emotions appear in the body.

Somatic therapy believes that as our body holds onto emotions and expresses experiences, that traumatic events become ‘trapped’ in our body.

Healing therefore takes place at the level of the body.

Body Awareness for Healing

Somatic therapy works by helping individuals become more aware of their bodily responses and how they are connected to their emotions.

This lets people process and release stored trauma held within the body which leads to an improved sense of self and greater psychological well-being.

In addition, somatic techniques such as breath work and movement help calm the nervous system and increases relaxation.

Techniques for Body and Mind Healing

Consequently, somatic therapy helps alleviate pain and stress, encourage awareness of the bodily sensations, and teach people how to feel safe in their body.

Somatic therapy therefore uses numerous techniques such as breath work, grounding, use of descriptive language to stay close to the experience that is taking place in and around a persons body, movement, meditation, humming, sequencing; paying close attention to the order in which the sensation of tension and stress leave one’s body, titration, which involves the practitioner lead process of experiencing small amounts of distress to relieve pain.

Safe and Gradual Healing

Somatic therapy uses gentle and gradual approaches to help people feel safe while exploring their body-based sensations.

Somatic therapy has been found to benefit people presenting with various concerns and difficulties.

These include post-traumatic stress disorder, stress, anxiety, addiction, mood disorders such as depression, identity development, trauma, self-esteem issues, sleep
problems, grief, chronic illnesses, pain management, emotion regulation difficulties, relationship issues.

Holistic Healing

Somatic therapy is an integrative approach to treatment that emphasises a holistic approach to healing.
